Free Webinar Focuses on Treating Chronic Pain Patients With Mental Illness

Assessment and treatment of chronic pain in patients with depression, schizophrenia, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will be discussed in a free Webinar on March 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Webinar is being put on by the Prescribers' Clinical Support System for Opioid Therapies (PCSS-O), of which APA is one of the member organizations, with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Leading the Webinar will be Igor Elman, M.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard University. The presentation will address three common syndromes representing the spectrum of aberrant pain from the relative pain insensitivity seen in schizophrenia to the amplified pain perception found in PTSD and major depression. Elman will discuss psychological management and pharmacotherapy and will advocate for more involvement by psychiatrists in pain management. Click here for registration information.
